American province of St. Elizabeth
During the great inflation in Germany in 1923, the leadership of the Congregation considered establishing a mission house in the United States with a view to possible financial support.
Through the efforts of Father Hilgenberg, the brother of one of the Sisters, the sisters were offered assignments in a home for neglected boys in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. Thus, in December 1923, five Sisters were sent from Germany to begin work in the home in St. Louis. It quickly became apparent that the Sisters were not up to the task of working with the neglected boys. When they learned that there was a home for the elderly in Alton, Illinois, which the Sisters of the Precious Blood were offering for sale, the Sisters moved to Alton in 1925. There they founded the first home of their own in the United States, which they called "Saint Anthony's Infirmary". Over time, this home for the elderly evolved into St. Anthony's Hospital, which eventually also became the Provincial Motherhouse of the Province St. Elizabeth.
Province St. Elizabeth is currently home to around 110 Sisters living in 12 mission houses.
Apostolates in which the Sisters are active include:
• Care for the ill and elderly
• Early Childhood education
• Teaching at various levels
• Formation for religious life
• Service to bishops and priests
• Administration
Sacred Heart Region in Brazil
In 1972, Sisters were sent from the United States to Brazil in response to a request from Bishop Henrique Rüth in Cruzeiro do Sul, in the Amazon jungle in Brazil. He was looking for religious Sisters to assist him in evangelization and social work in his diocese. The 27 Sisters in eight convents in Brazil form the Sacred Heart Region as part of the St. Elizabeth Province.
Our apostolates in Brazil are mostly in the areas in pastoral and social work.
From 2011 until 2023, some sisters of the American Province worked in Cuba in the seminary in Havana and with the bishop in Santa Clara.
